the Japanese writing systems – booklet | poster | research
Designing multilingual content is becoming increasingly important in a global and interconnected world. This project draws attention to the beauty and diversity of different writing systems and to shift the gaze beyond a Eurocentric perspective. It examines the outstanding Japanese writing systems, with their rich cultural histories, philosophical approaches, typographic expressions, and the understanding of Japanese aesthetics. The small booklet and the poster give designers a short guide for working with the Japanese scripts: Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji. In the spirit of wabi-sabi, the poster was cut up, sewn, decorated, and stitched together to create an unique embodiment of this Japanese tradition.
